Ending Unregulated HMOs in Smawthorne

Tough new restrictions on HMOs in parts of Castleford including Smawthorne have come into force following new rules introduced by Wakefield Council. Landlords will now need planning permission to convert a house for 3 or more people, previously they only needed it for 6 or more.

I’ve spoken with many local residents about the increasing number of HMOs in recent years where landlords have failed to tackle antisocial behaviour problems. That’s why we need stronger standards and restrictions in place. Along with local councillors I’ve been calling for this change and I welcome Wakefield Council’s action.
